Fatma and Halil; they didn't give up, they did it!

IGAM, Malala Fund Champions of GulMakai Network Project, makes the voice of refugee girls to the world!

Fatma, who came to Turkey from Iraq 5 years ago. She has 6 sisters and a brother. Her sister had to get married. She has a younger sister and brother. Her little brother Delal is lucky for continuing his education whereas Fatma isn’t because her Turkish level and her age prevent her from going to any middle school in Turkey.

Towards education….

When the IGAM Malala Fund Team met her, she desperately expressed her desire to continue his education and pursue a career in law.In December, we asked her to express her wish in front of a wide audience and Reha Denemeç who is a Deputy Minister of National Education in conference which we organized.Fatma went on stage with her brother Delal and repeated her wish to continue her education. Immediately after the conference, the Director of the Ministry of National Education Foreigners Branch Şefika Biçer directed the IGAM Malala Team to the relevant officials in order to solve Fatma's situation.

From complete darkness to a new life…

Hedil Aruf was born on April 10, 2005 in Aleppo, Syria. Hedil, who continued school until the 3rd grade, was forced to halt his education due to a brutal war affecting all of Syria and its neighbors. In the midst of this war, Hedil, her brother, mother and stepfather fled Syria for a safer environment.

She never gave up!

The biggest problem when they arrived was housing. Also Hedili couldn’t go to school in Turkey because she didn’t have any id card. She was enrolled in Ulubey School after changes in regulations on school enrollment of refugee children. Due to the lack of Turkish, her Turkish peers initially ruled her out. Hedil felt isolated and lonely at that time. Hedil never stopped learning Turkish by herself: While my Turkish friends listened to Turkish songs, I learned the names of the songs and looked at the Arabic translations of the lyrics. ” As her language developed, she began to enjoy the lessons. Music and art lessons were her favorite lessons. Hedil knows how to play the flute and enjoys drawing.
